What forms do I need to fill in?

First thing you need to do is fill in the application form Form AN New. Guidance notes for filling in the application form can be found at Guide AN. You will also need fo fill in Payment Slip and attach correct amount of payment.

Do the referees need to provide a letter?

No. They just need to sign your application form and fill in their details. Home Office may contact them if required.

How much does it cost

The cost is based on number of people applying (whether it is a single, couple, child or family application) and complete list is available at Fee Notes.

Do I have to send my passport with my application form?

Yes. However if you do not want to send your passport then you should use Nationality Checking Service. For a small fee they will check your application form and photocopy all supporting documents.

I need to travel abroad. How can I get my passport back?

You can ask your passport back by

Make sure you have your Home Office reference number with you and send your forms and documents recorded or special delivery.

How long does it take for Home Office to process my application form?

This depends on many factors and may vary from a month to a few months. Home Office publishes average response times at British Nationality Page. If you have waited over the average response time and not yet received a result, you can call Home Office on 0845 010 5200 to check status of your application.
