Since November 2005, applications made for British Nationality should be accompanied with evidence of English language and of Life in the UK. Since 2 April 2007, same requirement applies to applications made for settlement in the UK (indefinite leave to remain) in addition to meeting the usual requirements for settlement.
You can either take Life in the United Kingdom Test or join combined ESOL and citizenship classes to fulfill this requirement.
Here you will find answers to some frequently asked questions about the test and general immigration matters. If you do not find the answer to your query here, please use Life in the United Kingdom Forums to submit your question.

On your citizenship application form you will state that you have already passed the test and that is it.
January 30th, 2009 at 11:56 pm
i have tried several questions and had them correct a home but i have failed four times. please help me to know the correct site. thank you.
January 31st, 2009 at 11:47 am
The best practice is to read the book, go through practice questions several times and once you can score over 90% re-read the book and take the test.
I will recommend http://www.lifeintheuk.org, it is free and contains everything you need.

July 30th, 2009 at 9:54 pm
If you already have indefinate leave to remain in the uk than you dont need to take test for life in the uk though you do need this certificate once you apply for british citizenship.
July 30th, 2009 at 10:02 pm
Answer to sara aman:
Its better if you take this test just 3 or 6 months before the expiry of your 2 year spouse visa. You can apply indifinate leave to remain just 4 weeks before the expiry of your 2 year spouse visa. If you apply more than 4 weeks before the expiry Home Office may refuse you application with non-refundable fee.

For those worried about the test, don’t be. I was scared stupid in preparation for the test, read the book once and took the test and passed it in 4 minutes. They don’t tell ya how many you got right or wrong but all that matters is a pass.

Hi Admin,
Thanks for the good site. I’m just wondering if I’m allowed to bring in a calculator on the day of the exam as for the population and religion sections for example, I could then just memorise the %s then calculate the actual no. of the populations on the day using the calculator. Please kindly advise. Also, was wondering whether the practise questions on this site is of a very similar difficulty of the actual exams? I found the questions on this site a lot easier than those on some other sites, so a bit worry that just doing these ones may not be sufficient for my exam. Thanks in advance!!
May 18th, 2010 at 3:17 pm
took the test on Saturday – passed at first attempt, thanks to this site! all you need to know is on here already, to answer my own q, you aren’t allowed to bring in calculators – therefore for the population & religion qs, i suggest you to refresh yourselves with both the exact numbers and the %s of overall UK population.

Hi, my question is similar to number 51. passed life in the UK two years ago, have ILR but now I am applying for my citizenship through NCS and they asked me to bring the certificate which I don’t have and can’t remember if the home office return it or not, do I really needed since there was no way I’ll have the IRL if I wouldn’t pass the life in the uk test?
thanks for your answer.

Hi
My question is almost identical to the question N 64. I passed my life in the uk test a year ago, successfully applied and received my indefinite leave to remain. Now i want to apply for the uk citizenship, but unfortunately cannot find my life in the uk certificate. Do i really need it as surely the Home Office would have a copy somewhere on their system? Or could they or you issue me with a copy?
Many thanks in advance for your answer

September 5th, 2010 at 6:00 pm
Dear Admin,
I am a British Citizen and married to an Agentine. We married here in the UK 29 Nov 2008 and then went to Argentina where my husband was granted a spouses visa valid from 12/01/09 until 12/04/11. We didn’t return to the UK until 8/3/09. We are now hoping on going back to Argentina for another 3 months from Nov – Feb 2011. Firstly I have presumed the 2yrs is counted from the day he first entered the UK. Secondly that we will not have an issue re reentery the country as he will still have 2 months left on his visa? It appears that he should think about taking the test asap as I have read here that you can take the test prior to the end of the 2yrs. I had originally thought it was 3yrs but was obviously wrong.

i am confused about when to submit the application for my husbands indifinite leave to remain as my husband entered the uk in febuary 2009 however his visa expires in april 2011 firstly i presumed the 2years is counted from the day he first entered the uk so his 2 years will be in february 2011. please reassure me when does his application need to be made is it 4 weeks before the visa expiry date in april or february.

December 1st, 2010 at 7:57 pm
Niloo/Hari,
I’m afraid it doesn’t matter even if you had a doctorate in English; the test compulsory for everyone.
December 1st, 2010 at 8:00 pm
Andrew,
There is no expiry date for the test so ‘theoratically’ it is still valid.
December 1st, 2010 at 8:02 pm
Abderrahman/Jeevananth,
Home Office wil keep the copy of the certificate when you apply for ILR and you will need to declare that you have passed the test already on citizenship application form.

Hi,
My husband has a spouse visa due to expire in April, I have been searching for what to do next and I have found several options which are:
Naturalization with the life in the UK exam and the extension of the visa.
The naturalization would be if he want to apply for a british passport in three years right? and its £750
The extension of the visa, for how long could he keep on extending this visa and how much does it cost?

my husband has a 5 years work permit visa and it will expire next year. he works for 4 years and 6 months in the same company but unfortunately he lost his job before he applied for his ILR permit. I am wondering if he still can apply for ILR permit or he needs to find another employer who can give him another work permit.
Pls reply.
January 29th, 2011 at 11:05 pm
If you have already applied permanent residency then you have perhaps sent the form to the Home Office. Do not worry; they keep the form so you have no actually lost it.

f you are here solely based on your huband’s work pemit, your stay will become illegal and you will need to return to your country of origin. Form Set(O) clearly states ‘continious 5 years’ and also a letter from the current employer is needed. I believe bes option is to get a job (any job) before applying.
However, if his earnings were good and he also has enough score then changing your application status to Tier 1 might help.
January 30th, 2011 at 8:42 am
If you pass the test you do not need any other certificate or course; ESOL route is only for people who cannot pass the test.
January 30th, 2011 at 8:43 am
You can take the test anytime and there is no expiry date.
January 30th, 2011 at 8:47 am
Once you have completed 5 years as domestic worker then you can apply for Indefinite Leave. You will need to pass before applying though.

He has papers from the home office to say he has indefinate stay. Can he apply for a british passoprt? will have have to do the life in the uk test? Will he have to apply for citizenship?
February 8th, 2011 at 11:40 pm
Test is a must unless you satisfy one of the following (from Home Office website):
You will not have to meet the KOL requirement if you are being granted settlement outside the Immigration Rules, or if you are applying for settlement as:
■ a Foreign and Commonwealth citizen on discharge from HM Forces (including a Gurkha);
■ the husband, wife or civil partner of a Foreign and Commonwealth citizen on discharge from HM Forces (including a Gurkha);
■ a victim of domestic violence;
■ the bereaved partner (husband, wife, civil partner, unmarried partner or same-sex partner) of a British citizen or someone who was settled here;
■ a parent, grandparent or other dependent relative of a British citizen or someone who has settled here (under paragraph 317 of the Immigration Rules);
■ a retired person of independent means;
■ a European national or the non-European family member of a European national, making an application under the Free Movement of Persons provisions (not based on the Immigration Rules);
■ a Turkish businessperson under the European Community Association Agreement (ECAA) with Turkey;
■ someone who has spent five years in the UK with permission to stay as a refugee;
■ someone who has spent six years in the UK with discretionary leave;
■ someone who has spent four years in the UK with exceptional leave to remain;
■ someone who has spent five years in the UK with humanitarian protection; or
■ a dependent child of someone in an employment category that preceding the points-based system (listed in paragraphs 128-193 of the Immigration Rules, excluding paragraphs 135I-135K) or of someone who is here as a businessman, self-employed person, investor, writer, composer or artist (paragraphs 200-239 of the Immigration Rules). This includes children who are 18 or over when they apply.
However, you will need to demonstrate your knowledge of language and life in the UK if you later apply for British citizenship, unless you are exempt for other reasons. For more information, see the Citizenship section.

Hi, I married a Tunisian, who was then granted a 2 year UK Settlement Visa. He came to live with me in the UK when I was 8 months pregnant. He was violent and abusive and the police removed him from my home 3 weeks later. There is a prohibited steps order for our son, and he hardly sees him. I informed the British Embassy that after 3 weeks of him living with me, I was no longer his sponsor. His Visa expires in 9 months. Because we are divorced, and his situation with our son, how will he gain indefinate leave? Will this be granted to him? What will he have to do?

Good day,
I’m due to take my life in the uk test soon. I’m pretty confident about what I know from the book. But I’ve now been told that there are questions about the region you live in. Are these questions from the book? As in they’ll ask you more questions to do with the Scottish information from the book for example or are the 6 random questions about current info?

There is no expiry so you should be fine with your existing certificate.
Ashley;
How good is your English? If you are confident in English and can understand the contents of this website then there is no need to go through the ESOL route, just take the test.

Hi Admin Team,
I am a work permit dependent on my wife’s visa. She has a work permit sponsorship from her company, the old style (she has been on it since 2004). We now have all our documents ready to submit to the home office, but I have one concern.
I took my Life in the UK test last year October when we were still living at our old address. She took her test recently, and our post codes don’t match on our tests. Will this be an issue and impact our application. I know I can’t get a re-print or amendment of my test, and was thinking of taking it again just to have the correct address on my test result.
Your comments will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mr K

How do I get a duplicate of my UK naturalisation certificate? I now live in South Africa.
June 24th, 2011 at 8:42 am
Fatima,
There is no expiry date; Once you have passed and retain the pass document you no longer need to pass the test again.
June 24th, 2011 at 8:47 am
Carey,
Here is the link for the application form:
http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitecontent/documents/britishcitizenship/duplicateregistrationcert
With regards to being abroad, you may need to speak to British High commission where you are.
June 24th, 2011 at 8:49 am
Nadia,
If you have sent the certificate when you have applied for the ILR then it will not be returned and hence the reason you cannot find it. The certificate is not needed in this case, just tick to box in application form to say yu have already passed the test.
June 24th, 2011 at 8:51 am
Shahzeb,
Sorry to hear you have failed. What I would suggest everyone to make sure the test material/practice that you are studying are based on the latest edition of the book.
June 24th, 2011 at 8:55 am
Mr K,
As long as you have the certificate it should not be an issue. However I would keep bank statements from both addresses just in case if I were you.
June 28th, 2011 at 10:50 am

I am a US citizen and have been studying full time in London on a student visa for a year. I was here for six months before that scouting universities. My boyfriend, a British citizen has proposed to me and I am wondering if it would be smart to change my visa status to fiance instead of student? What would the benefits of this be to me if any? Would it affect my chance at citizenship down the line if I do? Should I just continue with my student visa and postpone the wedding until I graduate? Any advice you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.
July 6th, 2011 at 3:32 pm

July 29th, 2011 at 5:53 pm
i have served in HM’s Royal marines for 5 years and recently married my long term Girl friend. She is a UK citizen and have been from birth. i am not a UK citizen (south African) but i do however have indefinite leave to remain status for the UK. My question is: Will my time spend in the UK 5 years thus far combined with my Church of England marriage certificate and the fact that i am serving in the military and serve on a open 22 year contract ending in 2026 qualify me for a British passport. Just to ad I am willing to renounce my South African citizenship once UK citizenship is obtained.

Do I need to take this test before submitting my application form?
August 6th, 2011 at 1:52 pm
As I know since 6 April 11 there were changes to the ‘knowledge of language and life’ requirement for settlement. Now Work Permit holders must take the Test when applying for ILR. But how about their dependants? My husband’s English is not good enough. He is only 10 months here. Can he take ESOL course instead? If not, what would you suggest we do? Thanks

Hello,

– bank statements/letters
– water rates bills or statements
– building society savings books/letters
- mortgage statements/agreement
– council tax bills or statements
– tenancy agreement(s)
– electricity and/or gas bills or statements
– telephone bills or statements
plz tell me all docments r need or only one of them?????

August 12th, 2011 at 7:19 pm
Neyveli,
You will not get a replacement copy and yes, you will need to send the original.
August 12th, 2011 at 7:20 pm
Bina,
You do not need all; any of the documents you have put will be fine.
August 12th, 2011 at 7:23 pm
Yana,
He can certainly take the ESOL route however it is a long process. I suggest you look at the material together and see how he does on the practice tests. If results are lower than 50% then I think you should start looking for a suitable ESOL course.
August 12th, 2011 at 7:23 pm
Rani,
Yes you should.
August 12th, 2011 at 7:24 pm
Hersi,

Can I get a UK passport with my letter of leave to remain?
I have had leave to remain in UK for the last 20 years, but didn’t bother getting a passport as I didn’t need to travel. I didn’t even renew the passport with which I came to the UK.
My main concern is if I need to do the tests exams etc that have been introduced after I got my leave to remain?

Admin,
I’m a US citizen living in the UK on a spouse visa. Do I still have to take this life in the UK test even though English is my native language?
September 23rd, 2011 at 9:42 pm
Hi. I am trying to book the Life in the UK test via the Life in the UK .gov website. My wife is Irish, I am American and we currently reside in the US. The website requires a postal code and states that I should bring proof of my postal code to the test centre. The problem I’m having is that the website won’t accept a US postal code during registration (and I do not yet have a UK postal code) so I can’t book. I won’t be moving in the UK until December, but will be in London in October and wanted to take the test then. Any advice?

I have an indefinite leave to remain status. I have moved overseas and now wish to return to the US with my spouse and son (holding US citizenship). What is the visa status they ought to apply for?
We also would like to bring our nany with us (Moroccan citizenship).
What would be the conditions?
Thanks a lot for your time

September 28th, 2011 at 11:24 am
Hi there. I didn’t realise my 2 years spouse visa has been expired for a month. All the time I thought it will expire in October but as I was completing all my docs for my ILR application, I noticed it’s already expired. Do you think I’m still eligible to apply for ILR eventhough it’s already expired? Or will it be rejected if I will risk to apply? Or do I need to apply for another spouse visa?Any ideas will be much appreciated.

Hi. I am going to apply an indefinite leave to remain next year (feb) as my 2 years spouse visa will be expired by the time.
I have studied college before in Scotland. So will I still have to attend the ESOL classes? or I can just buy myself the ‘Life in the United Kingdom’ handbook,study it then book the test???
Thanks

I have a dual citizenship (Lebanese-Canadian). My wife is a British Citizen. I got my Spouse Visa from Canada (where we were living) on my Lebanese Passport. It is mentioned under countries whose citizen do not need to take life in the UK test was Canada. Do I need to take the test or not in this case.
Also after I get my ILR (Idefinite Leave to Remain)on the bases of a spouse to a British Citizen after how long more I can apply for British Naturalisation (i.e. would be 3 years from the day I entered the UK with a spouse visa which is Jan. 9, 2010 or 3 years from the time I get my ILR).

Hi
I have just purchased the preparation book for the life In UK test. But I do not expect to take the actual test until 2013-2014. Does the reading material change every year? I wouldn’t expect the history of UK or the laws about employment and human rights to change but nonetheless will I need to buy another book in 2yrs time? And if I do take the test earlier than then for how long is the score valid?
Thank you!!!
Ana

Hi,
I have Indefinite live to remain, and I will be eligible for citizenship in January 2012. I just notice that I have lost my ‘Life in the UK’ certificate which I have passed in Jan 2010. I have the reference number of the test but not the actual certificate. So my questions are:
1) Do I need the certificate to apply for the citizenship?
2) Is there any way I can get hold of another copy of my certificate?
Please help me.

Hi,
Basically, i’ve been a student here for 6 going on 7 years. Did “A levels” here and graduated from a 4 year uni course. Currently doing a diploma. Now, i know what it says about settlement options for students( 10 years long stay is necessary), but i was wondering whether i could apply now. I only ask because a friend of mine who has been here for only 5 years is planning to apply for indefinite leave to remain after taking the “life in the Uk test” because he was told that, while it’s not guaranteed, his 5 years might be enough.
Thanks.

I have lived here for 6 years and a bit and have indefinite leave to remain (since 2009). I have gone to a school and college here, and have just started university. Would I still need to take the life in the UK test to get a passport?

Yesyerday I passed my Life in UK test in first attempt. here I wantto share my opinions:-
Always read the offical book carefully.
Dont try online test andreading on the websites other than this one as I found http://www.lifeintheuk.org/ very helpfull.
I tried hiren.co.uk but found many wrong and out of offical book questions which creats lot of confusions
Take time
read questions carefully.
Try all questions in offical study book and question paper book.

I live in the UK for 2 years now, currently working for British Airways, thinking of going part time so I can also work elsewhere for some more experience .
Me being a Portuguese National, also thinking of going form British Citizenship in 3 more years, would I be allowed to get it working part time in two places ?
thank YOU
